gratitude: a 21-day exploration day one

giving and receiving

A sense of gratitude can change everything.

Gratitude can be an emotion, a state of mind, a practice. Gratitude is defined as “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”

On this exploration of gratitude, we will play with different ways to give and receive appreciation and kindness to others. Along the way, we will share what we are grateful for.

Consider the difference a sense of gratitude can make.

You walk down the street, rushing along to pick up a quick lunch before heading back to work. You enter a restaurant as the person exiting holds the door briefly for you. You quickly grab for it just as it falls out of reach. You wait in line. The person in front of you starts to order one thing and then changes their mind. They look back at you apologetically. You impatiently shift from foot to foot as you wait. Now at the counter, you ask for the soup of the day only to be told they just ran out. Annoyed, you order a salad instead and scroll through Facebook on your phone mindlessly as you wait for your to-go bag.

You receive a call as you are heading out to get lunch. Your friend’s surgery went perfectly. She is recovering with her family.

Now at the counter, you ask for the soup of the day only to be told they just ran out. You joke with the cashier that it wasn’t meant to be and go with your second choice – a salad. You patiently wait for your to-go bag, thinking of your friend recovering at the hospital.
