On the way to school one morning, I was explaining my exploration of gratitude to my 7-year-old son. I told him about the focus on giving and receiving as well as sharing something I am grateful for each day. He was quiet for a bit and then asked what receiving meant. I told him how receiving required awareness and focus to really “get” what you are receiving in your mind and feel, or take in, the gifts you receive every day into your heart.
“Can I ask for something?” he inquired.
“Sure.” I told him, “What are you thinking of?”
“Well,” he said, “if I ask my friends to help me move the big rocks at school, I could receive that help.”
“Yes.” I smiled at his wisdom. “Asking is definitely part of receiving.”
Give: a written “thank you”
Receive: what you ask for
